In the early 1900’s, after the conclusion of World War I, the United States rose as the greatest economic power in the world with an unmatched industrial and agricultural base. After the frugality of the war, consumerism flourished, and so did one of the world’s greatest stores, Sears, Roebuck, and Co.
From 1908 until 1940, Sears, Roebuck and Co. began offering a way to achieve the American dream. It was now possible to own your own home by simply placing an order from their Modern Homes catalog which included over 90 different house plans. Sears Modern Homes department provided services including free floor plans drawn by an architect, a ready cut lumber package, doors, windows, etc. Everything needed to build a custom home was delivered by train right to your property.
Many of the homes offered in the catalog are constructed over basements, a must have in a turn of the century home. The Vallonia represents an iconic Craftsman style home. With a sweeping front porch and a quaint floor plan, it is easy to imagine this home in any American city. The attention to craftsmanship and details shine throughout the floor plan.
This Revit model provides a glimpse into a lost era in American history, a time when the true meaning of being neighborly was born and locking your front door was unnecessary.
